Madame Chiang Kai-shek

Postby etousa on February 25th, 2010, 6:44 pm

The book First Heroes says that Madame Chiang Kai-shek awarded medals to the raiders, it then goes on to say that Chiang Kai -shek gave a lengthy speech " and then handed out more decorations to every flier" (page225) Did the raiders receive more than just the Army, Navy, and Air Cops Medal, Class a 1st Grade?
Thanks

Well... not all the Raiders were present for the ceremony but the Chinese government did award all the Raiders with something. All of the Raiders received the Chinese Army, Navy, Air Corps Medal, Class A, 1st Grade except for the following...

Chinese Order of Yung Hui, 3rd Class - Doolittle

Chinese Order of Yung Hui, 4th Class - Hilger

Chinese Order of Yung Hui, 5th Class - D. Jones & Greening

Chinese Breast Order of Yung Hui - Fitzmaurice, Faktor, Spatz, Dieter & DeShazer

Chinese Breast Order of Pao Ting - Nielsen, Hallmark, Hite, Barr, Meder & Farrow

She was educated at Wellesley College, and spoke English fluently, as opposed to her husband, which is probably why she handed out the hardware.

Interesting fact: we could call it «First Guest of the Kremlin».
In the 30ths due to political differences between Josef Stalin and Chang Kai-shek the son of Chang Kai-shek named Chiang Ching-kuo was detained as a "guest" (similar to Crew #8 of Cap York) of the Soviet Union as a practical hostage where he worked in the Urals Steel and Heavy Machinery Plant. And on March 15, 1935 married a Russian girl Faina Vakhreva, a native Belorussian. She would later become known as Chiang Fan-liang.
Stalin allowed Chiang Ching-kuo to return to China with his Russian wife and two children (a boy and a girl) in April 1937 after living in the USSR for 12 years.

I can just see the conspiracy theorists having a blast with that one...see, Chiang Kai-Shek was a Communist puppet, and Communism and Capitalism are both run by the same folks! :D

Seriously, thought, that's interesting stuff. I did not know that. It must have been harsh for the young Chiang Ching-kuo. Is he still around? I know Madame Chiang hung in until age 105.
